If you have been following news in entertainment this week, you probably know that Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce, went completely public with the new identity–the cover of Vanity Fair being released.
Many chose to celebrate the announcement, others not so much. One person who had something to say was Drake Bell. If you hadn’t heard about the controversy surrounding Bell’s now-deleted tweet, you can read it here.
The basic gist of it is that the former Nickolodeon Star-turned musician tweeted “Sorry, still calling you Bruce”, only to delete the tweet (seconds, minutes..?) later. But that didn’t stop folks from screenshotting it. It went viral, and Drake Bell was a trending topic worldwide on Twitter because of it.
He’s receiving a lot of backlash for his comment, which some have labeled as “transphobic”. What’s my take on it? You didn’t ask but here it is anyway.
Here’s the thing. This isn’t the first time Drake has been blasted on Twitter for comments he made. Some time ago, there was a big fiasco among fans of Justin Bieber regarding some insulting comments Bell made about him having no talent, making fun of him in general, etc. He doesn’t seem to like Bieber much. Ok, fine, whatever. His opinion or not, the comments started off innocent enough then grew progressively antagonizing. He took it a little too far then.
Now he’ s under fire again. Some people think he’s desperate for attention. I’m not sure. I think he said something he intended to be funny but actually wasn’t, then deleted the tweet after realizing it was a bad idea. While I don’t actually know his views on the subject matter, my instinct tells me he made a mistake.
But now that the world has seen and knows about the tweet, he can’t pretend it wasn’t him or that he didn’t say it. My thought is that if Drake Bell really feels the way he does, he shouldn’t have deleted the tweet. Let it stay there and take the heat for it.
If it was something he just said without thinking, he needs to apologize and get it over with. He clearly wanted to take back what he said hence deletion of the tweet. I think that a lot more people would respect him more if he ackownledged his mistake and asked for forgiveness.
We’ll see what happens.
