When Are Celebrities Going To Stop Using Their Butts To Stay Relevant?

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you know the new trend: Big booty appreciation.

Meghan Trainor is “Bringin’ booty back” in “All About That Bass”

Nicki Minaj boasts proudly that she has “a big fat ass”.

Then we had Iggy Azalea and Jennifer Lopez come out with their song “Booty”.

And most recently, the vulptuous Kim Kardashian bared it all for her “Break the Internet” photoshoot.

Whether or not these leading ladies have had plastic surgery to enhance their, ahem, assets, or if they spend half the day in the gym doing squats and eating protein bars–we may never know. I do know one thing, though, and that is that all these recent stunts have one thing in common. Can you guess what it is? It leads me to my point and question:

When are these celebrity women going to stop using their butts to stay relevant?

Let’s stop and think about this here. In this day and age we are told that women should do what they want with their bodies–and rightly so. After all, it belongs to us, why should anyone else have a say in what we do with it? To criticize or put down a woman for wearing a revealing dress or even wearing nothing, would be no less than “slut-shaming.” And that’s bad. We as women should absolutely have a right to do what we want. But I am left asking–Is this what we as women, really want?

Do I want a great body? Of course. It’s the number 2 reason I try and work out and use that gym membership (The first being physical health). But when I think about the future and reflect on what people of the world, people I love will look back and remember me for–I sure hope it’s more than “Yeah, she had a great behind.”

There are other imprints (no pun intended) I would like to leave on this world. I want to help influence young people and spread a positive message. I want to be the best daughter, sister, friend and girlfriend I can be. I want to help the homeless, and I want to provide safety for abused and neglected animals. I also want to write about my experiences and opinions and share them with people.

I can’t help but wonder why we as a society focus on something so trivial, so superficial as a sculpted booty to justify our existence and succeed in the world. I know sex sells and that money is a huge factor, but celebrities are human too. Don’t they want the same? Why not make a statement by donating to charity? Or speak out against bullying–take a stand on an issue. Instead of a big butt, how about a big brain to show youth that knowledge is power? I’m not saying none of these celebrities have done this, because frankly, I don’t know. However, if they have, it’s certainly not what’s making the biggest news.

By all means, show off your body and don’t be ashamed. It’s a right we as women have earned and one that we deserve. But stop and think about the message you want to send, and the person you want to be. Think about what you want and go for it.

Personally, I want much more than that for the women in my life.
