What’s your brand?

As a blogger who also happens to be quite active when it comes to social media, I often hear a common question and topic of discussion among people–what’s your brand?

What is the one reason people should follow you on Twitter or Instagram, what do you specialize in that people could relate to?

The question makes sense. If you take a look at some of the most followed accounts on Twitter or Instagram, (besides celebrities), they all have a theme, or focus on one topic: Relationships, love, fitness, food, etc. I get it. We all have interests, some more common than others, and it makes sense that people would utilize these aspects of our personalities to attract a high number of followers.

If you take a look at my blog, I don’t necessarily adhere to this common “rule” of the social media world. I don’t have ONE thing that I focus on that people could say, perhaps “If you want great recipes, check her out” or “Her blog is strictly about travel”. Sure, when scouring the archives of Megan’s Musings, you’ll find posts related to food, travel, and oodles more. But there’s no “one thing” that I can tell you that will bring you to my blog. Because, it’s a bit more complex than that.

I once asked a good friend of mine, “What should I write about?” It was one of those nights where I had a classic case of writer’s block. I casually brought it up over Facebook chat. “What would you wanna read?”

His answer has always stuck with me.

He said, “Megan, it’s not about what I want to read about. It’s what you want to write about.”

I wasn’t expecting that, but the words were wise. And that’s when it hit me…my brand is ME. Because I’m a person, with multiple interests, a variety of experiences, and a unique story. Megan’s Musings is about [Me]gan.

I come from a small town, but I have lived in Chicago for 7 years. I have experienced the city from the point of view of someone who did not grow up in such an environment. I am a daughter, a sister, a friend, a girlfriend. I love to write, take pictures, explore new places, eat food (try new restaurants), read, watch movies, and learn about the word.

The purpose of Megan’s Musings is to share with readers my point of view–and to see the world through my eyes. The blog is for all my readers–to touch people, to give people something to relate to (because we’re all human, right?). But it is as much for you as it is for me, to express myself and my interests.

What’s your brand? It’s a question I have routinely shrugged my shoulders to, soon forgetting it was ever asked. Now, I have an answer. My brand is me. I am my brand. If people like what they read and can relate, that’s fantastic.
